Recess/ed: Texture, Sound, Vision is a group exhibition that enables viewers to see and activate the body in art (or, figure) through the entry-point of materiality. The “body” seamlessly shifts between a subject within the work and/also the viewing body: each artist examines relationships with material and the third space that transpires between figure/form and textures. I invite the viewer to spend time with each installation, to note personal and shared physical comportment(s) in each space and within the exhibition as a whole; what sensations arise?
Time spent in this exhibition allows new ways of carving out relationality between individuated artists’ work and the viewer. Some optical, spatial, and aural moments within Recess/edmay locate the body as previously-rendered subject within the work, while other art pieces locate the viewer as the to-be-rendered subject. The undulation between artwork offers the viewer an opportunity to witness and actuate content, to reflect and engage tenuous meeting points between materiality and concept.
