March 27th | Living Arts | 8:00 PM start | doors open at 7:30 PM

In conjunction with the Oklahoma State Museum of Art, Living Arts is honored to host 50 States: Colorado. Join us for a performance and artist talk by Nick Vaughan & Jake Margolin, Houston-based interdisciplinary artists and a married couple, as they explore the connections between LGBTQ histories and contemporary queer experiences in the United States. Their primary body of work, 50 States, is an ongoing series of installations made in response to little-known pre-Stonewall queer histories from each state. Their research-based practice draws from recent groundbreaking academic work, the artists’ own archival research and significant time spent learning from and collaborating with local LGBTQ community members.

This performance/lecture is presented in conjunction with the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art exhibition of the first four completed states in Nick & Jake’s 50 States project: Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado & Wyoming.

Nick & Jake have had solo exhibitions at New York City’s Invisible Dog Art Center where 50 States: Arkansas will premiere in 2019, as well as Houston’s Aurora Picture Show, Art League Houston, Houston Community College, and Devin Borden Gallery. The artists are currently developing 50 States: Louisiana, Utah, Maryland, & California which they expect to premiere and tour over the next three years.

The artists are recipients of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a Tulsa Artist Fellowship, and grants from the MAP Fund, The Idea Fund, and the Houston Arts Alliance. They are members of the internationally acclaimed, Brooklyn-based experimental theater company The TEAM, and they frequently collaborate as visual designers with the choreographers Faye Driscoll and Yoshiko Chuma. Also, members of Houston’s BOX 13 Artspace, the artists are represented by Devin Borden Gallery, Houston

Last year The New York Times described Jake as “on the cusp of middle age,” which Nick is going to lord over his slightly more mature husband for, like, ever.
