S.A.R.A. Drumming Workshop

Dance & Drum Workshops The Sounds & Rhythms of Afghanistan (SARA) will hold a drum and dance workshop at Living Arts on Sunday, October 9 from 2 pm – 4 pm. Internationally acclaimed percussionists Salar Nader and Abbos Kosimov will lead the drum workshop which features rhythms and techniques of Central Asia and Afghanistanon Nader, on Tabla and Afghan Zehrbhagall (Dholak) and Kosimov on the Doyra also known as Dap, Childirma and Charmanda, which is regarded to be one of the ancient percussion instruments of Central Asia. Participants should bring their own drums, Frame drums, Djembe, Congas, Bongos, Cajon, darbuka, Doumbek, tambourines and or Rik/Daf - and or Traditional Indian Tabla, Dholak, Doyra. At the same time, the featured dancers with SARA will lead a dance workshop teaching Attan – the national dance of Afghanistan. The two groups will come together at the end of the workshop for a joint expression of music and dance. SARA is an extraordinary ensemble of internationally recognized musicians, consisting of Rubab, Doyra, Tabla, Vocal and on special occasion the national dance of Afghanistan, Attan. Salar Nader is composer and creator of Sounds and Rhythms of Afghanistan (SARA)is considered one of the most sought after and stunning tabla musicians of his generation and has been groomed by the one of the finest percussionist/tabla players in the world, Ustad Zakir Hussian. While Nader’s core education and primary expertise has been the Tabla, he also performs on the Afghan Zehrbhagali and the Afghan Dhol, a 13th century percussion instrument, widely used in North India as well as Afghanistan and Pakistan.

 


 

Wednesday's Drumming Instructor: Michael Back  


 

An excursion into the world of drumming.  Held at Living Arts and using their collection of drums, students will learn the methods and rhythms of this ancient form of expression.  
Artist: Michael Back. Wednesday, 7:30-9:30p.m. at Living Arts to all ages $10. per session or $50. for punch card for 7 sessions (ongoing).
