TRANSCEND: Five Black Artists by Five Black Artists TRANSCEND is a feature length film chronicling the lives of five Black visual artists living and working in Oklahoma. About TRANSCEND the film: TRANSCEND is the first film effort from Inclusion in Art to document the lives, socio-political ideas, and creative processes of five Black Oklahoma artists. Directed by J. Leigh and produced by Nathan Lee, Transcend began as a 20 minute companion film to the exhibition of the same name which debuted at Tulsa at Living ArtSpace. The original exhibition for Transcend explored the ideas of what Black art is and what it can be. This film not only expounds on that concept, it delves into the definition of Black culture itself. Because of the complexity of the subject matter, it was decided that Transcend evolve into a feature length film with a run time of 90 minutes. Transcend includes artists who range from emerging to established and who have varying ideas of about spirituality, the definition of Black art, and Black culture. Filmed on location in the homes and studios of the artists and in the historic Paseo district, Transcend shows Black artists in a way that has never been seen in Oklahoma. The five artists of Transcend include Photographer Rory Littleton, an openly gay, multi-talented artist who is not only a photographer but an actor as well with strong spiritual convections; Robert Hill, an established working artist trying to balance daily life with his creativity; Suzanne Thomas an artist and college professor of Christian faith committed to painting celebrating the strength of African American women; Brenna King, a young emerging artist of racially mixed decent struggling with her dual existence and Nathan Lee, a driven arts activist in an interracial relationship. Transcend was made possible through a grant from the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, support from Stephen Kovash owner of Istvan Gallery, contributions from private donors, and fundraising efforts from Inclusion in Art. The director’s cut of Transcend will be presented in DVD format for screening at Living ArtSpace Transcend: Five Black Artists by Five Black Artists Contact information: |
