Oklahoma Aquarium Announces “Sister Aquarium” Partnership

The Oklahoma Aquarium  announced its new “sister aquarium” partnership with the Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium on Monday, March 25 at 6:30 P.M.  Kenny Alexopoulos, Chief Operating Officer of the Oklahoma Aquarium, made the announcement and highlighted how the two facilitiesshare similarities in size, design, opportunities, and more.

“We’re looking forward to cross training our staffs together,” Alexopoulos says. “This partnership will allow us to work with new and different species of animals and technologies, and to experience cultural enrichment with new ideas and techniques.”

Many of the life support features in the Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium were designed by the Oklahoma Aquarium’s Chief Operating Officer Kenny Alexopoulos and Deputy Director John Money. Alexopoulos and Money were contracted as Head Design Consultants to advise on the exhibits, animal collection, visitor experience, staffing, as well as the aquarium’s filtration and other equipment necessary to care for the animals.

Similar to the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, the Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium is landlocked in Jerusalem; however, both aquariums address their environmental impact on important large bodies of water. The Oklahoma Aquarium is located on the Arkansas River and its education programs teach students about their impact on our rivers and waterways and ultimately, the ocean. TheGottesman Family Israel Aquarium highlights local impact on Mediterranean and Red Sea, as well as Lake Tiberias, the Dead Sea, and the Suez Canal. The Oklahoma Aquarium shows the impact of invasive species such as zebra mollusks in area lakes, and the Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium shows the impact of commercial fishing, invasive species, and plastic and other trash in the environment.

Both aquariums will also support each other in research and environmental education, beginning with trainings in Oklahoma for staff members Noam Katsir and Pablo from the Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium. The men will work alongside staff from the Oklahoma Aquarium this week, particularly around the reproduction of seahorses and jellyfish. Katsir and Ditnis will also join staff of the Oklahoma Aquarium at an international conference for Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) in Long Beach, California, later this week.

For questions about this partnership  or to speak with the visitors from the Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium, please contact aleitch@okaquarium.org

The Oklahoma Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, so all money collected through admission, memberships, and events go directly to supporting our exhibits and educational programs.
